Professional Showreels- for working and new actors alike!

Let me start by introducing myself, my name is Kieran Seabrook-France, I am the creative Director and writer here at Seabrook Day Productions. I started my career as a professional actor having trained at Drama School and gone on to tour regularly across the whole of the UK and the republic of Ireland.

As an actor we always hear how important it is to have a good showreel, they are used for applying for theatre and tv & film alike. Knowing where to start is an overwhelming with so many companies at all different prices and packages. I am here to help break down why you need one and what to look for.

Why do I need a showreel?

Showreels are an imperative part of a working Actors application for many roles, they are what is sent to a casting director. The casting Director will decide whether to see more of you in the first 30 seconds of your showreel, it needs to be your best work. It does not matter what you’re capable of, if they can’t see it immediately, you’ll be taken off of the pile. With so many Actors applying for every job, you need to give yourself the best chance of getting your foot in the door, an excellent Showreel is the best way to do that.

What should I have in my showreel?

Your showreel needs to be short and sweet, all the best bits of you. You don’t want too heavy scenes as don’t forget; Casting Directors have to sit through hundreds a day! Your showreel needs to be around 3 thirty second clips, cut together and enough to grab their attention and show how brilliant you are! It does not need to be a flashy big budget piece, the acting needs to be the core of it.

The start of your showreel should be your headshot and your agent’s information.

If you have clips from professional work, they should be the core of your showreel, and use services to flesh them out. If you do not have any professional work to add, don’t panic, a good showreel company should make what they film for you look like it came straight out of a production.

How do I know a showreel company is right for me?

Choosing a showreel company is a difficult thing, with so many options in different price ranges, knowing what to look for is hard. Firstly, you need to identify what you personally need; do you need a complete showreel or do you have some clips already to use? What is your budget? How far are you willing to travel? Do they seem approachable? Will they write scenes for you?

Being approachable is a priority for myself, being able to say what you need and working with the company to create your showreel is important. At the end of the day, they are creating a showreel for you, if you can’t express what you need and work together collaboratively, you won’t get the showreel best suited for you.

So, to recap ask yourself:

-What do I need?

-What is my budget?

-How far am I willing to Travel?

-Can I trust them?

-Will they create scenes for me?

The most important thing is to do your own research and make sure the company is right for you, not just prodigious or the most expensive!
